The Red Angus History

" "Seven innovative families chose to use Red Angus in 1954 to establish the industry’s first performance registry. Throughout its history, the Red Angus Association of America has maintained this objective focus and has earned a well deserved reputation for leadership and innovation. By making the right choices over time, and ignoring the short term pressures of industry fads, demand for Red Angus genetics by the beef industry is at an all time high."

RED HIDE COLOR HAS THREE DISTINCT ADVANTAGES:

RED HIDE COLOR HAS THREE DISTINCT ADVANTAGES:
"1)Red is the most populous color of cattle breeds world wide. Red Angus provides a continuity and uniformity of color to any crossbreeding system. 2) Red is more heat tolerant than black and the bronze pigmentation gives great resistance to cancer eye and sun burned udders. The majority of the world’s cattle are in areas that need heat tolerance, so the red color is a definite advantage. 3) Being crossed red always breeds true. Red Angus carry no diluter genes and thus avoid the grays that result when crossbreeding with blacks." Follow this link and click History Brochure to read complete history.

My Story

My story all started long before I was born. My great grandfather Glenn's Mother and Farther settled in Idaho in the late 1800's west of Malta; homesteaded there and built their first cabin they also had property on the Raft River and raised cattle there. This family of mine were one of the first pioneers in the valley. The family built a house in 1914 in which  Grandpa Glenn was born one year later; Grandpa Glenn lived his entire life in that same house. He passed away in 2002 in the same room in which he was born. To this day my Great Grand Mother still lives in that same house on that same ranch and raises cattle with the help of her children. (this history was given to me by my Great Grandmother.) My Great Grandmother Ada passed away May 2th 2016 at the age of 96 years old; but not before getting my graduation announcement I also just graduated from College (Summa cum laude; PHI THETA KAPPA) with an Associate of Arts Degree in Agriculture (Farming and Ranching). I will be returning to next year and get my Associate of Applied Science Degree in Agribusiness.

The term cattle are like lollipops comes from my Grandmother; because she likes Beef Masters, and Salers; Great Grandpa liked Black Angus and had a crossbred herd, and my Breed of choice is Red Angus.

My other Great Grandpa left home at the age of 14 to become a cowboy; he worked cattle ranches in Colorado, Arizona  and Nevada most of his life before becoming a farmer and raising hay, He to is still farming and growing hay for my Dad, Great Grandpa Bob also still has a few head of cattle; once a cowboy always a cowboy.

Mom says that Ranching and Farming is a genetic trait and I was lucky and got both genes. My love for the beef industry started with my first 4-H market beef project and my goal is to be part of the next generation of beef producers and feed the world.

My Red Angus Journey and history in the beef industry begins.
